Formula
Brent = ICE Brent front-month futures settlement (USD/barrel)
- Spot Brent – Dated Brent benchmark (ICE)
- OPEC+ supply decisions – Production quota adjustments
- Global demand proxy – PMI composites, China imports
Why It Matters
Brent is the global oil benchmark — the single most important input for EM current accounts, imported inflation, and energy security ratios. For India, every $10/bbl Brent move shifts the current account by ~0.4% of GDP. Oil shocks propagate to bond yields via inflation expectations and to FX via terms-of-trade.
Institutional Use
Energy desks, EM sovereign analysts, and inflation traders anchor to Brent. IEA and OPEC monthly reports contextualise supply-demand. GraphiQuestor tracks Brent on the Regime Digest vitals strip and Energy Commodities Lab.
